climbing el capitan

Self-directed mobile UX/UI project of an app that consolidates climbing details for El Capitan’s routes

Concept

El Capitan, located in Yosemite National Park, is a world-renowned and awe-inspiring vertical rock formation. Standing approximately 3,000 feet (900 meters) tall, it captivates climbers and outdoor enthusiasts with its sheer granite face and challenging terrain. Its vertical walls and complex routes offer an unparalleled test of skill, strength, and courage.

Notably, El Capitan gained even more fame with the Academy Award-winning documentary “Free Solo.” The film documented the extraordinary achievement of climber Alex Honnold, who became the first person to conquer El Capitan without ropes or protective gear.

Taking the initiative in a self-directed mobile UI project, I recognized the absence of a website or application that consolidated accurate climbing information about El Capitan’s routes. As a result, I embarked on creating an app that empowers climbers to access a comprehensive map encompassing detailed insights on each pitch’s difficulty, length, and topos.
